Last week in Rome, Maps of Hope: A collection of the Holy Father’s reflections on education and artificial intelligence was launched to accompany Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical, Magnifica humanitas.
It is humbling to have my artwork, Motherboard Portal (Verde) front the section on AI - the central focus of the Pope’s first encyclical. His comment that ‘AI needs to be disarmed’ is not lost on my practice of tearing apart the very mechanics that discharge AI, using the shattered motherboard sections to colonise Renaissance engravings.
Whilst AI could be seen as a new Renaissance, good or bad it must be properly interrogated. That is a task I relish as an artist. The fact that Pope Leo will see my work is not lost on me.
The book was published by ACU in collaboration with the Vatican’s Dicastery for Culture and Education.
